Introduction: In this study we investigated the protein concentration of the CC-chemokines eotaxin, eotaxin-2, eotaxin-3 and RANTES in nasal polyps and inferior turbinates for controls.

Patients: Nasal polyps (n=24, ø 44,5a, classification: allergy n=8; non-allergy n=8; aspirin-sensitivity n=8), control group: inferior turbinates (n=8, ø 41,3a). The distribution depended on prick tests and nasal aspirin provocation.

Methods: The tissue was homogenized with protein inhibitors (Complete, Roche), serum levels were measured using specific ELISA kits (R&D Systems) and the total protein concentration was measured in a protein assay reagent kit (Pierce Chemical Co.). Slides from each sample were fixed in formalin, eosinophils were countered at 400 x magnification (5 high power-fields). Statistics: mann-whitney-u test (*p< 0,05, *p<0,001), for correlation spearman-test (p=0,005).

Results: Following range of the protein concentration was detected: RANTES > eotaxin-2> eotaxin-3> eotaxin. The concentration of the eotaxins was in the patients´group significant elevated compared to the control group (eotaxin p=0,001/ eotaxin-2 p=0,007/ eotaxin-3 p=0,001). There was no difference for RANTES. The correlation of protein concentration/ account of eosinophils was significant for eotaxin (p=0,001)/ eotaxin-2 (p=0,002) and eotaxin-3 (0,003). A significant correlation wasn’t measured for RANTES.

Conclusions: Eotaxin-3 was detected the first time. Eotaxins might have an important role in the development of nasal polyps. The strong influx of eosinophils in nasal polyps might depend on the eotaxins. The role of RANTES seems to be unspecific.
