Low birthweight infants (birthweight <2,500 g) are a vulnerable subgroup that bear a disproportionate burden of infant morbidity and death in LMICs. The Low Birthweight Infant Feeding Exploration or “LIFE” study was a mixed-methods study related to feeding, growth, and neurodevelopment of low-birthweight infants in India, Malawi, and Tanzania. Study components included: (1) qualitative exploration of beliefs and practices for feeding small babies, (2) intensive in-facility monitoring of feeding practices, (3) a longitudinal cohort of almost 1,200 infants who were followed serially up to 24 months of age. Infants were evaluated based on birthweight type using size-for-gestational age and preterm status.
