Despite being one of the most prevalent tropical diseases, with a prevalence of over 40 million worldwide, rheumatic heart disease is one of the most neglected. Acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease make up less than 0.01% of funding for neglected diseases. Despite multiple challenges for global RHD prioritization, RHD has gained increased attention on the global stage, with recent WHO and World Heart Federation resolutions. Our group has prioritized pediatric cardiology training, clinical care, and research in Malawi. We have recently led recent projects on screening for RHD, improving adherence to benzathine penicillin in those with RHD, the relationship between acute rheumatic fever and GI parasites, and the development of a biomarker for acute rheumatic fever.
