My talk will explore the concept of decolonization and apply it to the field of global health. I will start with my own self-examination involving my privilege based on my ethnicity as well as my implicit biases and how this could or has affected my work in the field. I will also encourage the audience to do the same. A short history of global health will be reviewed to give a context to the reasons for decolonization. This will bridge to the concept of “social determinants of health” and use an example of my own place/geography to analyse the potential origins of these health disparities. Finally, I will explore what we should do with our global partnerships in research, education and training and end with hopes and dreams for the future.
