In another poster presented at the 15. Grazer Konferenz – Qualität der Lehre (Vienna, April 26th – 28th, 2011), we described the main features of a course in Narrative Medicine organized during the year 2010 summer term at the medical faculty of Paris Descartes University. The course was freely chosen among a set of about 20 other different options. Courses in Narrative Medicine or, more generally, in Medical Humanities, have become common practice in several medical schools around the world - humanism and empathy have indeed always been recognized as necessary to establish an adequate doctor-patient relationship; attentive listening to the patient is the first step in the sense of a biopsychosocial understanding.
After the course mentioned above all students were contacted and asked to fill out a questionnaire to assess their level of satisfaction with regard to the course. Feedback came from 38 out of 41 students. The two topics that received the highest satisfaction scores were those representing the self-reflexive attitude among students: the course on autobiographical writing (2.38 points) and the course about empathy and patient-physician relationship (2.13 points), which correspond to satisfaction values of 86% respectively of 84%. In addition to scoring their appreciation numerically, students were allowed to add personal comments in free text. Some of these texts as well as more details on the poll outcome are presented in the poster.
