Introduction: Ultrasound is paramount in gynecologic-obstetric diagnostics, necessitating development of specific competencies during medical residency. Despite attention from national and international bodies on ultrasonography training quality in gynecology, Germany shows a notable gap in structured educational programs. Moreover, ultrasound training integration within residency is often insufficient.
Methodology: A national survey was conducted to assess the state of postgraduate ultrasonography training among German gynecology residents. The study aimed to evaluate the presence of structured training in various educational stages, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale online questionnaire.
Results: The survey revealed a significant deficiency in structured postgraduate ultrasonography training. Residents expressed a preference for training under designated supervisors and reported feelings of insecurity in interpreting pathological findings. Concerns were raised about their preparedness for independent ultrasound use in future practice. The study also found that hospital structures largely impede organized ultrasound training for residents.
Discussion: Despite inclusion in the postgraduate gynecology curriculum, structured ultrasonography training lacks dedicated mentors and adequate time for regular instruction. A combination of structured theoretical and practical training, with regular practice and certification, is suggested. Additionally, free access to ultrasound models and medical literature is essential. These improvements could significantly enhance training quality, thereby elevating the skills of future gynecologists. Proficient use of ultrasonography is crucial for improving direct patient care.
