Health care education has traditionally relied for the most part on standardized assessment. Changes in our thinking about learning and instruction have introduced more student centered curricula. These curricula often match less well with standardized assessment methods. Therefore, non-standardized assessments have been introduced into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. These assessments use narrative information instead of scores, use human judgement instead of algorithms, measure non-cognitive aspects instead of cognitive aspects and focus on learning instead of accountability.

  • What can we learn from research about this more flexible and personal assessment strategy?
  • Has standardized assessment become redundant?
  • How can we prepare our students and teachers for working with new assessment methods?

These and other questions will be discussed during this presentation.
