Background: The Finnish Association of Physiotherapists (FAP) has been involved in development of Physiotherapy (PT) guidelines in cooperation with the Finnish Medical Society Duodecim since 2004. Due to very limited resources a model for developing guidelines together with PT students on master level was developed. This poster reflects some critical aspects concerning the contribution of the PT students and the academic staff from the Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in the development of clinical guidelines.

Context: A guideline concerning exercise therapy for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) was developed (www.suomenfysioterapeutit.fi) as collaboration between FAP and The Finnish Heart Association.

Description of best practice: A multi-professional expert group was responsible for the whole recommendation process. The role of the students was limited to the quality analysis of the articles included in the literature review part with supervision given by teachers from UAS. The literature search strategy demands experience as a researcher. Supervision from a PT teacher familiar with methodological questions as well as clinical competence is needed to support the students' work.

Lessons for guideline developers:The allocation of responsibilities between the actors as well as the multi-professional approach was beneficial in developing a treatment guideline for patients with CAD. Students' on master level can be involved in development of guidelines as long as the researchers / PT teachers are guiding the literature search strategies and method for quality analysis. Collaboration between UAS and working life facilitates implementation of guidelines in education and practice.
