Background: Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) are proven tools that have the health decisions making been more rational and diminished the gap between clinical action and valid medical information.
Objectives. The aim of present paper is showing health professionals the strategies implemented by Mexican National System of Health (MNSH) on the development of CPG.
Methods: Institutions of MNSH got agreed about the methodology for developing CPG supported by scientific evidence and it is composed for the following stages: priorizing health problems of the country, the creation of working teams, the development of CPG through adaptation and adoption process or the novo development, validation and integration of CPG to master catalog.
Results: The master catalog consist of 422 CPG distributed by medical specialties: 45% for internal medicine, 16% for surgery, 13% for obstetrics and gynecology, 5% for ophthalmology, 4% of public health and 5% other specializations.
Discussion: Compared with six centers of development of guidelines from North America, Europe and Oceania, Mexico is the newest country; because of Mexico started the production of CPG in 2007 and have published 106 guidelines per year.
Implications for guidelines developers/users: The implementation of CPG decrease the bias on the health professional decisions and contributes improving the quality of care and security of patients.
