Background: Preventive Child Health Care (PCHC) services are supplied for all children in the Netherlands, from birth to the age of 19 years, delivered by doctors, nurses and doctor's assistants (n=7200). The development and implementation of PCHC guidelines is financed by the Ministry of Health Welfare and Sports. At the national level, the Dutch Centre for Youth Health oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of the guidelines. Since 1996, 13 evidence-based PCHC guidelines have been published. Another ten will be published the next two years.
Objectives: Guideline adherence is generally difficult. This could be improved if guidelines are introduced systematically. For this purpose, we developed a framework that connects development, implementation and evaluation of the actual use of the guidelines. The framework has been applied since 1998. Furthermore, we created an infrastructure that supports organizations with the implementation of PCHC guidelines through various strategies.
Target group: Guideline developers, implementation consultants/advisors, researchers, policymakers
Description of the workshop: Presentation of the framework, the infrastructure and lessons learned from 15 years PCHC guidelines.
To facilitate interaction, we make use of a quiz in which we ask the participants questions and ask them to share experiences and motivate their answer. Then we will show how we addressed the issues.
Content: Introduction of the framework and infrastructure; Presentation of some real-life cases with the implementation structure (one guideline as an example); Parallel exercises in groups. Sharing experiences about enhancing implementation during development, selection of implementation activities and evaluation
