Introduction: The increase in the number of drugs taken by patients leads to an elevated risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and hospital admissions. This particularly affects patients older than 80 years, who in many cases (>80%) suffer from multimorbidity and are treated with multiple drugs. However, little is known about drug compatibility in this age group. The PRISCUS list (list of potentially inappropriate medications for elderly patients in Germany) outlines which drugs are inappropriate in older patients.

Aim of the Study: To compare whether self-reported drug prescriptions for older and multimorbid patients with diabetes comply with the PRISCUS list.

Methods: Data on older diabetic patients (>80 years) treated in a specialized practice for diabetes (DSP) in the first quarter of 2010 were analyzed.

Results: 123 patients (7% of all patients) in the DSP were older than 80 years. In addition to antidiabetic medication, on average 6.7 drugs were prescribed per patient. 35 of the 123 patients (28%) were prescribed medication listed in PRISCUS, mainly from the following drug classes: hypnotics, antidepressants, anti-arrhythmics, and digoxin derivatives. 7 of the 123 patients (6%) were prescribed more than one drug listed in PRISCUS.

A further analysis comparing self-reported drug prescriptions and prescriptions documented in AOK data will be presented.

Discussion and conclusion: The PRISCUS list could be a useful, additional tool for checking and improving drug prescription in older and multimorbid patients
