Background: Cochrane Insurance Medicine (CIM) works within Cochrane, to promote the production and the use of systematic reviews for decision-making in insurance medicine (IM). Knowledge translation (KT) is at the core of Cochrane’s Strategy to 2020 and is defined as the process of ensuring that health evidence is used by those who need it to make health decisions [1].

Aim: To provide an overview of the KT concept; the Cochrane’s KT strategy; the CIM offer of KT products and the main challenges faced by CIM when promoting the production and use of evidence.

Method: We compile and present information from: Cochrane official documentation; an international survey on knowledge needs of IM professionals and the KT products delivered by CIM.

Results/findings: Since 2013, CIM has implemented a total of 19 KT activities focusing on growing users capacities (n=11), creating strategic partnerships (n=5), translating evidence documents into multiple languages (n=2) and identifying evidence needs (n=1). CIM KT activities target mostly IM practitioners. Main challenges to foster the production and use of IM evidence, are: evidence needs are considered to be country- or legislations-specific; the available evidence needs to be compiled and more accessible; priority-setting exercises are required to define systematic review priorities; the need to create synergies in the production of evidence and to promote CIM as a source of evidence among IM professionals.

Discussion and conclusions: CIM is strengthening capacities to implement and deliver KT activities according to the characteristics and needs of the end users. Future CIM KT strategies will give greater emphasis on the compilation and dissemination of evidence, the generation of KT products for decision-makers and positioning CIM as a relevant source of IM evidence.
