Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the common causes of disability of the working population.
Aim: Evaluation of the effectiveness of physical rehabilitation of patients with RA.
Method: 63 patients with RA were involved into the study. They were divided into observation group (Group 1, N=45), in which standard therapy was supplemented with physical exercises (15 lessons daily) and a comparison group (Group 2, N=18) who used the standard methods therapy. Before and after rehabilitation the clinical, instrumental, functional parameters and quality of life (QL) (HAQ1) were evaluated. Patients' impairments were assessed in both groups with domains contained in ICF core sets [1].
Results/findings: We observed a pronounced decrease in the DAS28 index (group 1 – from 3.3±0.7 to 2.3±0.8, in group 2 – from 3.5±1.1 to 2.7±1,0, p<0.05), morning stiffness (group 1 from 86±15 to 54±17 min, group 2 – 93±18 to 59±16 min, p<0.05), disorders of the joints (domains of ICF b280, b455, b710), motor function of patients (b780, d 230 d410, d450, d 850) at 1-2 categories (group 1 – 35% patients, in group 2 – 23%), improve QOL (group 1 – from 1.6±1,2 to 0,22±0,16 points, in group 2 – from 1.4±0,35 to 1.3±0,28 points, p>0.05). Effectiveness of rehabilitation in group 1 and 91% in group 2 – 61% (χ2 = 8,029, P<0.05).
Discussion and conclusions: Physical rehabilitation is an effective way of reducing the health limitations of patients with RA.
