From prevention across rehabilitation to early retirement pension: How the statutory German Pension Insurance secures employability

Background: In Germany as in most industrial countries, the demographic trend is characterized by a low birth rate and a higher life expectancy. On the one hand, this trend can results to a lack of qualified employees. On the other, the adaptation to new technologies can be challenging for psychosocial health and participation. However, the Pension Insurance is concerned.
Aim: Accordingly, different types of interventions are offered in order to sustain employability.
Results/findings: Oriented to the leading approaches “prevention before rehabilitation”, and “rehabilitation before early retirement”, preventive intervention are provided to healthy workers in order to avoid reduction of work capacity. In addition, screening programs are offered for early detection of work ability impairments or to identify indications for medical rehabilitation. Furthermore, counselling activities are offered to employers in the field of occupational health, activity and participation.
Discussion and conclusions: The above mentioned interventions of the Statutory German Pension Insurance secure employability, enhance activity and occupational participation in Germany.
