Objective
Confocal microscopy evaluation of corneal morphology after vitreoretinal surgery complicated with passage of silicone oil into anterior chamber.
Methods
8 patients (8 eyes) presenting silicone oil in the anterior chamber, but of no clinically evident corneal distortions were enrolled into the study. In vivo confocal microscopy of the cornea using ConfoScan 3 (Nidek Technologies) confocal microscope equipped with the standard 40x immersion lens were performed. Central, upper and lower part of the cornea were assessed separately.
Results
The alterations in corneal morphology, especially in endothelium, posterior and medium stroma were observed. In all the cases the changes were more advanced in the upper part of the cornea.
Conclusions
The application of confocal microscopy in patients with silicone oil in anterior chamber reveals the presence of early morphological alterations of cornea before their clinical manifestation.
