A central concept of EBM is the integration of individual clinical expertise and the best external evidence available; the latter meaning clinically relevant, often basic, research. The aim is to re-evaluate accepted diagnostic tests and therapeutic regimes in order to replace them by ones which are more effective, efficient, selective, and safe.
In particular in, but not limited to rare diseases, data from animal models may be an alternative source of information, as there is usually insufficient evidence from clinical trials.
This presentation focuses on the value of animal models of hereditary retinal degenerations for providing direct or indirect evidence that may influence human diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
