Objective
In former studies we proved already the effects of a special music-therapeutic program on IOP physiological and psychological parameters. The following studies aimed on reconfirming these results and intended additional investigation of the effects on ocular blood circulation, EEG and stress-hormones.
Methods
A special new music-therapeutic program (consisting of music, guided imagery and binaural beats) was presented to 75 glaucoma patients for 10 days at the same time of day in single sessions. We checked: IOP, visual acuity, visual field, temperature of the eye, ocular blood flow (OBF), EEG und stress-hormones cortisol and endothelin, psychological tests. We compared these results to a control group.
Results
IOP reduces significantly during the session and over the 10 day period. Visual acuity and visual field became slightly better. Temperature raises significantly during the session, OBF revealed different results, skin galvanic resistance rose significantly. EEG showed a slight increase of alpha-waves and decrease of beta-waves thus indicating relaxation. Cortisol levels fell significantly, Endothelin gave various results, psychic state ameliorated.
Conclusions
Finally we can demonstrate, that music therapy is a very helpful additional treatment in glaucoma therapy.
