Objective
At the Department of Ophthalmology, Heidelberg, PCO evaluation of a silicone and an acrylic intraocular lens with sharp edge design was performed. Follow-up time ranged between 18 and 24 months.
Methods
In a prospective randomized study either the AMO Clariflex silicone IOL or the Sensar AR40e hydrophobic acrylic IOL was implanted in 47 patients following uneventful phacoemulsification.
Results
Mean patient age was 73.4±12.9 (AR40e) and 76.2±7.8 years (Clariflex), respectively. The IOL power ranged between 10 and 25,5 D. IOL folding and implantation was uneventful. In both groups, all patients achieved an BCVA of 20/32 (AR40e) and 20/25 (Clariflex), respectively. There was a very low PCO development with a mean EPCO score of 0.2 (range between 0 and 0.6), on a scale 0 to 4. Photopic phenomena were not mentioned.
Conclusions
Both IOLs with sharp edge design showed good functional results, a stable position in the capsular bag as well as low PCO development.
