Objective

To investigate the effect of intraocular lenses (IOL) with different surface structure on lens epithelial cells (LEC) in vitro on human capsular bags.

Methods

Sham cataract surgery, including IOL-into-the-bag-implantation, was performed on 8 pair of donor eyes after removal of the cornea. The capsular bag including the IOL was removed, pinned on a culture dish, covered with medium, and incubated. In each pair of donor eyes, the two different Silicone-IOLs to be compared, were implanted individually into capsular bags. One eye was assigned to receive a IOL with Fresnel rim structure (Acrisil-73N AL) and the other eye, an IOL without a Fresnel rim structure (Acrisil-73N OM). The time required for complete coverage of the posterior capsule by a confluent monolayer of LEC was documented.

Results

Complete LEC coverage of the posterior capsule occurred between 9 days (Acrisil-73N AL) and after more than 19 days (Acrisil-73N OM). Mean time for total LEC coverage on the posterior capsule was 14.25 (+2.8) days in the capsular bag group with the Acrisil-73N AL implanted. For the Acrisil-73N OM group it was 11.5 (+1.5) days.

Conclusions

The Acrisil-73N AL was associated with a later complete cell coverage of the posterior capsule than the Acrisil-73N OM.
