Purpose: To evaluate alteration of the aqueous humor and the corneal endothelium temperature during phacoemulsification.

Setting: Nippon Medical School Musashi-kosugi Hospital, Kanagawa, Japan.

Methods: Temperature of the aqueous humor and the corneal endothelium was measured using 2 temperature probes set in the anterior chamber during US oscillation in the porcine eyes with or without ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs).

Results: Without OVDs, the temperature both in the aqueous humor and the corneal endothelium rapidly rose by US oscillation, while with OVDs, the temperature elevation of the corneal endothelium site was suppressed compared to the aqueous humor.

Conclusion: Surgeons should pay attentions to the retention of OVD during phacoemulisification because it can protect corneal endothelium from the heat.
