Objectives: To present a comprehensive summary of diagnostic tools used for early detection of keratoconus.
Methods: Review of strategies, signs, patterns and indices used to diagnosis keratoconus
Results: Clinical signs of early corneal deformation can be detected by different devices and strategies. Recognizing of topographic, pachymetric, wavefront, and biomechanical signs and patterns allows early diagnosis of keratoconus.
Conclusion: Keratoconus is a time-dependent progressive corneal deformation characterized by ectasia and asymmetry of one or both surfaces induced or promoted by external and/or internal factors. Early detection has been dependant of the technology available and the knowledge of how the disease initiates or progress.
