Purpose: For over 20 years research on the restoration of accommodation after cataract surgery has been conducted. In the last few years advances have been possible due to new surgical techniques and materials.
Methods: Today, different models of accommodating intraocular lenses (A-IOLs) are available. They are designed as single or dual optic devices. Their mechanisms of function are based on different principles like optic shift or change in curvature.
Results: The dual optic Synchrony A-IOL so far showed good functional results, a high patient satisfaction and a stable reading ability.
Conclusion: Accomodating IOLs can provide good visual results. However, they do not yet restore accommodation completely. Careful patient selection is therefore crucial. Further developments of accommodating devices are already on the horizon.
