Objectives: To investigate the effect of increased airway pressure resulting from the prone position of patients on surgical hemorrhage during lumbar spine surgeries in elders.
Methods: Sixty patients who underwent the lumbar fusion surgeries were classified as American Society Anesthesiologists classification II were enrolled in our study. The peak airway pressure (P Peak), plateau airway pressure (P Plat), mean artery pressure (MAP) and arterial blood gas test (ABG) result were recorded 5 min after general anesthesia induction in supine position (T0) and 5 min (T1),60min (T2), operation ending (T3) after turning the patients into prone position.Intraoperative blood loss was measured at the end of surgery
Results: Twenty-five males and 35 females were enrolled in this study. The mean patient age, height, and weight were 72 ± 10years, 160±9cm, and60±8kg, respectively. Pressure peak and pressure plat were significantly increased after placement of patients from the supine to the prone position There was no significant difference in the ABG results. The intraoperative blood loss was significantly higher correlated with P Peak and P Plat changes (R2 0.6343, 0.5256,respectively).
Conclusions: Pressure Peak, pressure plateau resulting from the prone position may predict surgical hemorrhage.
