Objective: Because of demographic changes, ever greater demands are made of knee replacement systems by patients and surgeons. Patients desire complete restoration to their original condition with an unimpaired capacity for cycling, hiking, skiing and performing everyday work. To meet these demands, knee joint systems with increased flexion are currently being marketed.
Methods: The results of 57 patients who were given a NexGen® CR-Flex Mobile through a standard anterior approach were evaluated in a prospective study and compared with 50 patients who received a Genesis II knee arthroplasty system. The bicondylar resurfacing arthroplasty was implanted with cementation (Palacos®) and without resurfacing of the posterior patellar surface. The clinical outcome (Knee Society Score, ROM and radiographic findings) was recorded over a 4-year follow-up period and compared.
Results and conclusions: Despite positive results in the first four postoperative years, this new knee system shows no advantages with regard to KSS and ROM compared to a standard knee replacement system (Genesis II).
