Introduction: In the last years the incidence of prostate carcinoma increased remarkably. One reason of this increase is the improvement of the diagnostic possibilities, especially the improvement of the early diagnosis. Among therapies the rate of curative procedures increases.
Material and methods: Since 1993 the Clinical Cancer Registry (Klinisches Krebsregister, KKR) of the Regional Cancer Centre Dresden (Tumorzentrum Dresden, TZD) is gathering the reports of patients with tumour diseases (diagnosis, primary therapies and follow-up) in a region of 1.2 million inhabitants. Since 1996 the completeness of the documentations is sufficient.
Following the already published results of the years 1996–2000 [Ref. 1] we analysed the Data for the period 1996 – 2003. The results describe the trends of
- incidence
- mortality
- age distribution
- TNM categories
- curative and palliative therapy approaches
- therapy methods
- survival
in the region of TZD.
Discussion: The results will be discussed in national and international context. The option of curative therapies increases in accordance with the shift of TNM-categories to localized and locally limited stages of cancer. The paper will discuss approaches for a regional long-time evaluation.
Examples will demonstrate the possibilities of a regional organized Clinical Cancer Registry – as the KKR is one – in the field of tumour specific, population related analysis with the intention to describe the oncological care in a defined region.
