Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the behavior of individuals.
Objective: to investigate the perceived changes in lifestyles behaviors among Spanish university students during the confinement. Analyze the results by gender and propose nursing strategies.
Design and methods: An observational, cross-sectional online survey study was conducted during the month of April in 2020. The FANTASTIC questionnaire was used to assess lifestyles of the 488 Spanish participants who took part in the study. This study was developed by the nursing department at the Camilo José Cela University with acceptance of the Ethics Research Committee.
Results: Most of the participants were women (76.3%) and was studying health sciences (50.2%). Female university students have been especially affected compared to their male fellows. Social and family relationships, personality, interior and career were the aspects that worsened during the confinement for women. For men, lack of physical exercise, social and family relationships, and career were affected to a greater extent. In both cases, confinement was a protective factor against tobacco and alcohol consumption. Nursing strategies must consider the university population at risk, health promotion interventions must be designed with a gender perspective and alleviate the consequences of the detriment of lifestyles due to the pandemic.
Conclusions: The lifestyle of Spanish university students worsened during the confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic Female were the most affected. Health promotion strategies should address the university student’s population focused on its necessities.
