Objectives: The morphologic and functional anomalies of the fetal hand are often difficult to diagnose and are sometimes overlooked during usual prenatal scans.
Method: The authors are reviewing the main anomalies of the fetal hand, including the complete work-up as well as counselling for these cases.
Results: The best moments for ultrasound examination of the hands are late in the first trimester (during the morphological scan) and in the middle of the second trimester of gestation.
The spectrum of malformations varies from subtle finger deformation to the complete amputation of limbs.
Conclusion: A hand anomaly may be isolated but often is associated with a specific syndrome condition. Therefore the prenatal diagnosis and counselling remain very important due to prognostic implications as well as functional consequences.
