Background: Scars, skin pigmentation mismatch, alopecia, and contour deformities are often negatively affecting good reconstructive outcomes in burn patients. In cases when surgery is reaching its limits, it is important to provide another treatment option using medical tattooing. This may help to improve the postoperative outcome and patient’s satisfaction. We analyzed the beneficial effects of medical tattooing, an advanced form of cosmetic tattooing, in post burn reconstructive surgery.
Methods: Ten patients with burns who received reconstructive surgery with skin grafts and suffered from skin pigment mismatch, hair loss and/or contour deformities were analysed. All patients underwent post-reconstruction medical tattooing by a tattoo-artist to improve colour mismatch and contour deformities using colours like carbon black, titanium dioxide, glycerine, isopropyl alcohol. All colours were applied using an electric tattoo machine.
Results: Medical tattooing showed an overall improvement of the post-burn scars. Patient satisfaction was significantly improved and all patients would undergo medical tattooing again. Further, no adverse events were noticed.
Conclusion: Our case series showed that a combination of reconstructive surgery and medical tattooing is a promising approach to improve scars and patient satisfaction in post-burn reconstructive surgery.
