In spite of their necessity, the generally accepted European Practice Guidelines for Burn Care doesn't exist at present. Nevertheless, a lot of work has been done by EBA to create and let approve some guidelines, especially after appearance of the American guidelines in the year 2001.
Why do we need the burn guidelines? Because the Europe which is getting unified, needs to have at least some basic opinions concerning burn care unified, too and "speak the same language" in burn care.
Unfortunately the burn practice is very different in european countries and it is very difficult to reach a consensus even in some basic definitions. This is the reason, why the European Practice Guidelines for Burn Care exist only as a draft, which is now open for discussion.
Following aspects are described:
- 1.
- Definition of a standard, guideline, option
- 2.
- Definition of terminology in burns (depth, extent etc.)
- 3.
- Definition of a Burn Centre – organizational structure, equippment, staff and its education, minimum volume of clinical work, admission criteria etc.
- 4.
- Definition of generally accepted techniques in Burn Resuscitation and Treatment
It seems to be more or less certain, that at least for the reasons of certification of Burn Centres and for insurance of the european population the Burn Practice Guidelines must be approved in the next future. Their power will be directly proportional with the intensity of the european unification.
