Abstract

The 1st Skull Base Microsurgery Course of Beijing Tiantan Hospital was held from 7-10 November 2015 at Beijing, China. The course was hosted by ENT Department of Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Prof. Yin Xia, director of Department of Otolaryngology, presided over the course, which included one lecture day and three surgical technique training days.

Multidisciplinary specialists of otolaryngology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology gathered from across the country to give umfangreich lectures. Prof. Ji-Zong Zhao, academician of Chinese academy of sciences, made a speech “Thoughts about skull base surgery”, in which he reviewed the history and status quo of the skull base surgery and introduced a variety of skull base surgical indications and surgical approach. Prof. Dong-Yi Han, current chairman of Chinese Society of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, delivered a speech on “How to Preserve Facial Nerve during Acoustic Neuroma Surgeries”. Prof. Zhi-qiang Gao, designate chairman of Chinese Society of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, talked about clinical application of Infratemporal Fossa Approach Type B.

On the surgical technique training days, various approaches of Skull Base Surgery, such as Subtotal Petrosectomy, Transotic Approach, Infratemporal Fossa Approach Type A, Infratemporal Fossa Approach Type B, Translabyrinthine Approach and Retrosigmoid Approach, were practiced by the 14 students of the course on cadaveric heads under the instruction of Prof. Yin Xia and Prof. Guo-Dong Feng.

At the end, the course was highly appreciated by all students.
