Abstract
Introduction: Until now there exists no standardized extratracheal devices to conduct the lung function after total laryngectomy. For this reason many pneumologists improvise with various, complex self-made systems.
Methods: The pulmonary function of ten patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after laryngectomy were studied. All patients suffered from larynx carcinoma.
Results: In our clinic we established a “base plate adapter [BPA] system” for all patients after laryngectomy. The BPA-device was well tolerated and delivered stable values compared with the ordinary measurement through a mouthpiece. The post-operative pulmonary function has not decreased significantly. All examinations were reproducible.
Conclusion: A standardized, simple and accurate method, like the BPA-based system, for the assessment of pulmonary function in laryngectomies should be used especially for patients with COPD.
