Background: To demonstrate the efficacy of application of an endoscope in vitrectomy to treat endophthalmitis complicated with intraocular foreign body (IOFB).

Methods: 8 patients (8 eyes) of endophthalmitis with cloudy cornea and intraocular foreign body were enrolled in this study. Endoscope was used to guide vitrectomy and IOFB extraction. Combined lensectomy was performed in 3 patients, silicone oil tampnation in 7 patients.

Results: With the use of endoscope, all IOFBs were extracted successfully. During 3-12 months followed-up, endophthalmitis in all patients were controlled, visual acuities of 6 eyes were improved, corrected vision of 2 eyes were better than 0.1, visual acuities of 2 eyes did not change. Retinal detachment was found in none of the patients.

Conclusions: Vitrectomy led by ocular endoscope expanded the indication of vitrectomy, endophthalmitis with IOFB can be treated in time, and severe corneal opacity did not limit the visualization. Endoscope could help to detect foreign body and other abnormalities in the dead zone of microscopy.
