Purpose: Eye injuries caused by high pressure fluid stream often lead to severe damage of the eye up to the loss of the eye ball as found in a current survey by Hennighausen, Darkow, Goldblum, Prost, Schrader.

Methods: Based on the results of this survey, the aim of this study was to investigate how improve the prevention of those injuries.

Results: Two main fields of prevention were elaborated: The protection of the eyes by goggles or face shield and correct implementation of safety instructions, especially the interdiction to aim with water stream on persons.

Conclusions: The authors consider prevention of eye injuries caused by high pressure fluid stream as an important task for ophthalmologists, desirable in cooperation with occupational health practitioners and safety engineers.
