Otitis media with effusion is defined as a middle ear condition with effusion occurring beyond the intact eardrum without symptoms and indications of the acute inflammation. It is one of the most frequent conditions in preschool children. Development of the condition is asymptomatic or with very scarce symptoms. In 40–50% of cases neither parents nor children notice the symptoms. Clinicians in primary health care often do not recognize this condition and do not distinquish it from the acute middle ear inflammation. The condition occurs in childhood and in 5–10% of cases, it leaves consequences: irreversible ear drum and middle ear changes, longlasting deafness and problems in language and speech development. The condition is the problem even for the developed countries earmarking huge financial means to identify it and begin treating it on time. Early detection of structural abnormalities of the eardrum accompanied with otitis media with effusion which might call for surgery in order to prevent complication should be given support.
