25 years ago a close cooperation between the University of Nairobi and the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich was set up by Prof. Lund and Prof. Klauss. This program has been supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and concentrates on the trainig of ophthalmology residents coming from East-Africa. German long term lecturers have been working in Nairobi. They supervise and participate in clinical and theoretical parts of the training program.

On the other hand short-term lecturers have to cover some subspecialties. Since 1981, I have been in East Africa and once in Ethiopia as a short term lecturer for strabismology and paediatric ophthalmology. The experiences I have collected during these short-term stays will be reported.
