Outline

Text

Objectives: Achilles tendon is the most frequently ruptured tendon in the human body.

Traumatic ruptures of Achilles tendon is relatively frequently = 1/5000 cases.

Percutaneous repair reduces the risk of complications compared to open surgery.

Aim of the study was to present the modified McGriffith surgical technique and evaluation of the results.

Methods: We analyzed the results of the treatment of 56 patients (mean age 45 years), 48 men (86%) and 4 woman (4%).

The analysis of the results was evaluated with the Leppilahti and Olerud- Molander scales.

Results: In all patients we achieved the complete healing of the ruptured Achilles tendon.

Postoperative overall results according to Leppilahti score were excellent in 44 cases /79%/, good in 8 /14%/, fair in 4 /7%/, 0 poor.

According to Olerud and Molander scale the results were excellent in 48 cases /86%/ and good in 8 /7%/, 0 fair, 0 poor.

Conclusions:

  • Percutaneous technique of repairing of traumatic ruptures of Achilles tendon is good alternative of the treatment.
  • Comparing to the "open" surgical technique causes less of the complications.
  • Can be realized with the local anesthesia.
  • It is economic procedure.
