Objective: In this study we have retrospectively analyzed the clinical features, case management and results in 11 patients with distal postero-inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms.
Methods: We reviewed 800 patients with intracranial aneurysms treated at our institution between January 1993 and November 2007. In the clinical review of the radiological data and postoperative reports, we found 11 patients with distal PICA aneurysms.
Results: The incidence of distal PICA aneurysms was 1.4% of all our intracranial aneurysms. The aneurysms had different locations on the artery axis. In two cases, we found double aneurysms and in 1 case MAV association. In this paper we excluded the aneurysm of the origin of the PICA. The authors discuss the difficulties of finding the site of the aneurysm. In 6 cases hydrocephalus occurred. The outcome was good to excellent in all cases.
Conclusions: The authors believe that is very important to know the anatomy of this artery for planning surgical approaches to the aneurysm in this region.
