Purpose: The potential of research into irrigation as a way of contributing to the progress of cataract surgery.

Method: I modified an i-Pod amplifier and attached it to the hand piece as shown here, offering power over 200 volts. In this PEA experiment using a porcine eye and the ultrasound machine, there is no aspiration pump. This is Free Flow Phaco.

Results: Even with low power oscillation, this simple machine can accomplish the mission. PEA is operable using irrigation only, without an aspiration pump. The nucleus can be removed just using free flowing perfusion, without any mechanical aspiration at all.

Conclusion: If we recognize the importance of irrigation and carry out dedicated research, we will be able to make major contributions to the progress of cataract surgery in the future.
