Purpose: To review the epidemiology of intraocular foreign body ocular (IFB); in 3 different Buenos Aires University Centers.
Methods: This is a prospective epidemiological and clinical study of IFB admitted to 3 Centers of the Buenos Aires University during a 10 years period; 1998-2007. Cases were analyzed with respect to: (A) demographics, (B) time, place and nature of trauma, (C) type of injury, (D) time to receive care, and (E) management and visual outcomes following primary repair.
Results: 95 percent of ocular trauma occurred in men (P < 0.001 chi-square test) with an average age of 23 years (ranging from 17 to 56 years). Several risk factors were found to statistically significantly increase the chance of eye trauma resulting in blindness: retinal detachment, choroidal rupture, and endophthalmitis.
Conclusion: The majority of ocular trauma in our population was due to working injuries occurring mainly in males and the retinal detachment, choroidal rupture, and endophthalmitis was increase the risk of legal blindness.
