Purpose: To analyse the character of injury, anatomic and functional results of the eye trauma with sparkling wine cork.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 67 patients in the age 15- 71 y/o with eye injury caused by the cork of sparkling wine.

Results: According to BETT closed globe eye injury was observed in 64 cases (95,5 %), incl. eye contusion in 62 cases and lamellar corneal injury in 2 cases. In 3 cases (4,5 %) there was open globe injury (with corneal perforating injury and with lens and iris prolapse in one case). Left eye was injuried in 64,2 %, right- 35,8 %. The character of the injury and its incidence was the following: corneal erosion – 5 cases (7,5 %), corneal edema – 1 (1,5 %), retinal edema–10 ( 14,9 %), eye hypertension – 19 (28,4 %), hyphema, accompanied by vitreous hemorrhage – 27 cases (40,3 %), vitreous opacity – 3 (4,5 %), subretinal hemorrhage – 14 (20,9 %). In 6 cases macular hole was observed, in 3 cases – retinal detachment. Iris changes was in 19 cases (incl. aniridia in 1 case). In 14 cases (20,9 %) VA was light perception; in 13 cases (19,4 %) – 0,06; in 20 cases (29,9 %) – 0,1 – 0,5 and in 20 cases (29,9 %) – 0,6 – 1,0. In 16 cases (24, 0 %) surgery was necessary and was performed. Among the main kinds of surgery were primary surgical treatment, vitrectomy, phacofragmentation, pneumatic displacement of submacular hemorrhage, iris reconstructive surgery.

Conclusion: Eye injury with sparkling wine cork cause severe trauma of posterior and anterior eye segment. So, there is evident the necessity of educational work and protective measures among population for the prophylaxis of such eye trauma.
