Aim
The os acromiale is a rare anatomic variation of the acromion that is caused by incomplete closure of the anterior epiphysis. Can it be treated using arthroscopic techniques?
Method
51 patients with an os acromiale (32 male, 19 female; mean age 59 years) were treated using arthroscopic techniques. In all cases an acromioplasty with partial resection of the os acromiale was performed. A stabilisation of the os acromiale was not necessary.
Results
45 patients were evaluated after 50 months (24 to 84 months). 34 patients had at least partial lesions of the rotator cuff, 8 of these nedded a reconstruction. All patients showed improved Constant score at follow up, but 4 patients were unsatisfied with the result.
Conclusion
Arthroscopic treatment of an os acomiale gives satisfying results. The literature shows that stabilisation of the os acromiale does not seem to be superior to our therapeutic concept.
