In a case of extensive larynxmalignoma, the laryngectomie is one of the possibilities of treatment. The voice rehabilitation is very important for the patients.
This paper will be show our experiences with Provox voice prostheses after laryngectomie.
In our clinic was done 89 laryngectomies in a time between 06/1998 and 06/2006. 36 patients got a voice prostheses.
The mostly postoperative problem was the fungal growth by Candida albicans. Caused by this problem, 32 patients got a defect prostheses valve, 18 patients show a periprosthetic leakage of the fistula.
In our patients, we don’t change the prostheses in 39%. In 23% we changed the Provox prostheses one time, in 11% two times. The outher patients got prostheses changes up to 7 times. This mean, that our patients got in the middle 1,89 changes of the voice prostheses. The shortest time between the changes was 1 week.
In 4 cases we must do the surgical occlusion of the shunt.
For treatment of the problems with the Provox voice prostheses we create an special step-by-step procedure. On the end of this concept there is the surgical occlusion of the fistula.
In conclusion of our study, the Provox voice prostheses is a good procedure for voice rehabilitation after laryngectomie. Mostly the fungal growth take to problems with the prostheses valve or the fistula (periprosthetic leakage).
We don’t regular change the prostheses, only when we found an defect prostheses.
