In the last years compression algorithms have been developed to realize a good audio quality at low bit rates. This had been done through the psychoacoustic model which was derived from normal hearing subjects. The strategy ACE (Advanced Combination Encoder) was modified and is known as PACE (Psychoacoustic Advanced Combination Encoder) strategy.

The distribution of the electric field inside the cochlear could be investigated by NRT (Neural Response Telemetry) measurements. If at a fixed electrode the masker is varied from electrode to electrode, a bell-shaped curve results which describes the excitation on the selected electrodes. The resulting pattern is called Spread Of Excitation (SOE).

10 subjects participate at the PACE study. NRT measurements have been done in 9 subjects so far. In 6 cases SOE curves could have been recorded successfully. Correlations have been investigated between speech test results and the width of the SOE curves. SOE curves might help to improve the psychoacoustic model to increase the performance of the PACE strategy.
