Objective

The paper studies the interrelation between the diabetic disease and the age-related macular degeneration, underling the incidence of the macular degeneration at patients with diabetes mellitus, the evolution and the functional resaults after treatment (laser macular treatment and medical treatment).

Methods

The patients with diabetic disease and age-related macular degeneration (35 cases) where separeted in two groups: patients with diabetic retinopathy in different stages of evolution, and patients without diabetic retinopathy. We realised a complete ophtalmologic examination for each patient involved in the study, including retinophotographies on 60 degrees and angiograms. The follow-up period varied between 6 months and 36 months.

Results

The evolution of macular degeneration was in relation with the retinal alteration due to diabetic retinopathy.

Conclusions

The diabetic retinopathy represents a severe prognose factor for diabetic patients with age-related macular degeneration.
