Several electrophysiologic tests are available for the analysis of retinal and optic nerve function. These include as clinically established methods the electrooculography (EOG), the full-field electroretinography (ERG), the multifocal electroretinography used (mfERG), the pattern electroretinography (PERG) and the visual evoked potentials. Electrophysiologic tests can be used as sensitive and objective methods for early detection and follow-up of functional alterations of the retina or the optic tract. For the differential diagnosis of inherited retinal dystrophies it is of importance to record at least once an ERG and mfERG. If an optic nerve dysfunction is suspected, a VEP is the first choice e.g. combined with an ERG. The adequate use of electrophysiologic tests is mandatory for making a diagnosis as well as patient counselling and allows to avoid unneccessary other examinations as well as costs.
