Recovery of the central field of vision after macula hole surgery: a Study with Nidek microperimetry MP-1

Objective

A recovery of a central scotoma has been observed after a successful macula hole surgery. This study aims to demonstrate the postoperative development of the scotoma.

Methods

19 eyes of 19 patients (age 21-81) have been preoperatively examined with best visual acuity (BVA), optical coherence tomography exam (OCT) and a central visual field (12°) by Nidek MP-1 microperimetry. All patients have undergone a pars plana vitrectomy with ILM peeling and injection of gas. 16 patients received additionally a concentrate of thrombocytes, 3 were given a blood drop on the area of macula hole. BVA, OCT and another microperimetry exam were performed 3 months later according to the first exam.

Results

9 patients have been examined after the operation so far. 4 of them have shown a vision increase (≥2 lines), the other 5 had a stable vision (vision decrease/ -increase <1 line). No patient experienced a vision decrease of 2 or more lines. In all 4 patients with vision increase the OCT exam has shown a macula hole closure, in the microperimetry exam we have seen a reduction of the central scotoma of 20-30%. Additionally a more stable fixation was registered. In other 5 patients with stable vision acuity a closure of macula hole has been seen in 4 patients. In the microperimetry exam an unchanged central scotoma has been noticed in 3 patients, 2 had a general reduction in the sensitivity of the central field of vision.

Conclusions

MP-1 is an appropiate tool for the course after the macula hole suregery. Especially due to the online eye tracking the exact scotoma size and the stability of the fixation can be determined precisely. The study is still in progress.
