Objective
To evaluate the efficacy of the use of Sealed Capsule Irrigation on PCO reduction after cataract and clear lens extraction surgery.
Methods
Four patients (8 eyes) underwent clear lens extraction with acrylic IOL implantation, eleven patients (22 eyes) underwent cataract extraction with hydrophilic IOL implantation and 2 patients (4 eyes) underwent cataract extraction with silicone IOL implantation. Phacoemulsification was performed in all eyes. In a prospective double masked, controlled and randomized manner, sealed capsule irrigation (SCI) with sterile water with the use of the Perfect Capsule Device (Milvella, Epping, Australia) was performed in one eye of each of those 17 patients during surgery, after obtainig a written consent.
Results
The time of surgery with the use of the device was extended by 3-5 minutes, no additional corneal incisions were necessary, and the sealing properties of the device worked perfectly for those 17 eyes. Preliminary results (up to 6 months in most cases) showed a significant reduction in capsule fibrosis and contraction in treated eyes compared to control fellow eyes. All 34 eyes had clear corneas during follow-up.
Conclusions
The SCI system using the Perfect Capsule Device efficiently provided a closed system for irrigation of the posterior capsule with sterile water and preliminary results show a promising effect on PCO reduction.
