Objective

Ophthalmologists may be considerably involved in making a diagnosis of significant systemic disease and on occasion they may even be the first who assume their presence. With an early diagnosis patients may benefit form an early therapy.

Methods

In this paper periocular processes, which are frequently associated with a significant disease are demonstrated. However, only lesions which exhibit a tumorous aspect are included. Not included are processes which are restricted to the bulbus, i.e. phakomatoses.

Results

The lesions may be grouped into xanthomatous (e.g. Tuberous Xanthomas), xanthogranulomatous (e.g. Necrobiotic Xanthogranulom with Paraproteinaemia, Erdheim Chester disease), histiocytous (e.g. Langerhans Cell Histiozytosis), infectious (e.g. Sarcoidosis, Leprosy), neoplastistic (Kaposi`s Sarcoma, lymphomas, as well as metastases) and other lesions (e.g. Sebaceous adenoma, keratoakanthoma, Rosai-Dorfman syndrome, Giant cell Polymyositis, Carney`s complex, actinic Granuloma, Calcinosis cutis, Lipoidproteinosis and lymphomatoide Granulomatosis.)

Conclusions

The presence of one of these periocular processes mentioned should lead to a systemic evaluation, in order not to miss an underlying systemic disease and initiate a proper treatment.
