The German expression „Patientenkompetenz“ has different meanings, not only for patients themselves but also for their doctors. Showing some examples of competent patients it will be pointed out that for modern medicine it is a need to accept a patient’s competence in finding his or her own way to overcome the illness and to support them in finding this way.
