German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

24.05. - 28.05.2006, Mannheim

Welcome Address President of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Dear friends and colleagues,

on behalf of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery it is my privilege to welcome you to Mannheim for the 77. Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery themed: "Tomorrow is now - the presence of modern concepts of therapy". I am delighted to present to you a broad spectrum yet focussed programme of high level Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

Today´s Otolaryngologists meet indications, therapeutic concepts, techniques, scientific challenges, and reimbursement systems unknown to our predecessors. Guidelines, DRGs, and rapid transfer of scientific knowledge into our daily practice will nevertheless imprint on our specialty. Globalisation will exhibit visible results of international experimental and clinical research in short time frames, as exemplified by the internet. For the future, speed and intensity of our apt to innovation and interdisciplinarity in research, development and clinical cooperation will thus be of extreme importance. This conference will be an appropriate way of celebrating the momentous changes and improvements that have occured in all subspecialities.

Our daily clinical and research work is tremendously influenced by techniques and products from abroad and internationalisation is by no means an unknown quality to our society. For confirmation and broadening of this attitude, for the first time we have organized a '1st Joint Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery'. We appreciate very much that we could enlist a world-renowned international faculty who will share their concepts and techniques in the scientific meeting. The spectrum of topics covers the most relevant and current conceptual, surgical and technological advances in selected challenging areas of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. The Meeting represents an ideal opportunity for all German Otorhinolaryngologists and their international colleagues to come together in a relaxed friendly environment for the sharing of ideas and expertise.

The format of the congress will change considerably from previous conventions. Experimental and clinical research will be promoted in poster discussions. As such, more space will be allowed to the young Otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons. In addition, the extreme number of new developments and products will be presented to a larger extent at specific symposia. Suffice to say that innovation and interdisciplinarity have worked as a background when selecting these themes as priority topics for our meeting.

The pharmaceutical industry, more so the medical device industry and its innovative power have played a significant role ever since the foundation of our society. New techniques will significantly influence our future work. This year's meeting devotes exceptional space for presentation of these new technologies in form of the industrial exhibition and industry-sponsored symposia. It will provide the opportunity for companies to showcase their state-of-the-art technology, products and services.

Finally, we have composed a social programme to hopefully meet the expectations of our participants and accompanying guests and to assure (re-) creative evenings during our meeting.

I look forward to welcoming you at the Congress in Mannheim.

Yours,
Karl Hörmann

The English abstracts which are published after the Annual Meeting may therefore diverge in content from the German abstracts on this site. Hence, the published articles meet the state of knowledge at the completion date of the respective manuscripts.
